CLINTON, IA (August 25, 2019) - Josh Roberson turned in 6.2 shutout innings and the Clinton LumberKings coasted to a 6-2 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Monday night at NelsonCorp Field. The win cuts the LumberKings (39-24, 72-60) magic number to clinch a playoff spot to four.
Roberson (3-4) needed little support over a commanding 6.2 inning performance. After allowing three walks through his first three innings he settled down to end his night with his third win of the year. He allowed no runs on four hits while striking out six.
The LumberKings broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second against Timber Rattlers (35-28, 66-66) starter Max Lazar. Kameron Misner doubled to open the inning and stole third following a strikeout of J.D. Osborne. With the infield drawn in on the grass, Evan Edwards bounced a ball to second but was still given an RBI when Misner broke for the plate and scored without a throw home.
In the bottom of the fourth, Clinton put the game out of reach with a five-run rally. RBI singles came from Misner, Thomas Jones, Davis Bradshaw, and a two-run single by Samuel Castro, putting Clinton on top 6-0.
The runs were more than enough to hang Lazar (7-3) with the loss. Over an abbreviated 3.2 inning assignment he allowed six runs on five hits while walking none and striking out five.
Wisconsin avoided the shutout with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth against Clinton reliever Cam Baird. Baird allowed a two out, two-run, single to Yeison Coca before retiring Jesus Luanjo with a fly out to right to end the game and preserve the LumberKings win.
The LumberKings will meet the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers for the finale game of their four-game series Tuesday night. Clinton will throw righty Tanner Andrews (7-4, 3.70) while Wisconsin will tap righty Luis Contreras (2-2, 2.79). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. (CDT).
