Idaho Falls, ID - On Wednesday the 2019 MLB 1st Year Player Draft wrapped up with rounds 11-40 occurring. Monday and Tuesday saw the first ten rounds occur with two additional compensation rounds. The Kansas City Royals, the parent club of the Idaho Falls Chukars, selected 41 players in the draft, with one of the players coming in the compensation round.
Kansas City held the second overall pick in the draft and selected Bobby Witt Jr., a shortstop from Colleyville Heritage High School in Colleyville, TX. Witt is the son of former major league pitcher Bobby Witt, who pitched in the big leagues for parts of 16 seasons. The elder Witt was drafted third overall by the Texas Rangers in the 1985 MLB 1st Year Player Draft, making it the first father-son duo to be drafted in the top five picks in MLB history.
After Witt, the Royals selected Division 1 collegiate players with 16 of their next 17 picks. Florida shortstop Brady McConnell was taken with the Royals' second round pick, while Arizona State right-handed pitcher Alec Marsh was taken in Compensation Round B.
