Sugar Land Plates Eight Unanswered Runs to Earn the Win

SUGAR LAND, Texas – The Round Rock Express (55-50) dropped Sunday night’s series finale against the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (47-58) at Constellation Field by a final score of 11-6.

Round Rock RHP A.J. Alexy (5-5, 6.75) was tagged with a blown-save loss after tossing 0.1 innings out of the bullpen that saw four earned runs on three hits and one walk. Sugar Land reliever RHP Brett Conine (4-3, 7.63) earned the win with two walks and two strikeouts over 3.0 hitless innings of work.

Along the Train Tracks:

  • Round Rock put the game’s first runs on the board in the third inning. 2B Mark Mathias worked a leadoff walk before 3B Davis Wendzel hit a single. A double from 1B Nick Tanielu sent Mathias home and Wendel to third. SS Ryan Dorow followed with a two-RBI single that put the Express ahead 3-0.
  • Sugar Land responded in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own. With two outs, SS Alex De Goti walked and RF Marty Costes singled before a home run from 2B Franklin Barreto tied the game.
  • The Express put one run on the board in each of the next three frames. Wendzel launched a solo home run in the fourth inning, LF Nick Solak went yard in the fifth and Dorow scored on a C Matt Whatley sacrifice fly after hitting a triple in the sixth. The runs increased Round Rock’s lead to 6-3 heading into the seventh.
  • The home-half of the seventh inning saw six runs come home for the Space Cowboys. Three singles, one double, one walk, one groundout and one three-run home run from CF Corey Julks pushed Sugar Land ahead for a 9-6 advantage.
  • Sugar Land add two insurance runs in the eighth inning for an 11-6 lead. Back-to-back walks from C Korey Lee and De Goti started the frame before Lee scored on a Costes single. De Goti crossed home plate as DH Scott Manea grounded out with one out recorded. A strikeout from Round Rock RHP Jesus Tinoco ended the inning before the Express went down in order in the ninth, sealing the 11-6 final score.

E-Train Excerpts:

  • The six, seven and eight hitters for Round Rock each recorded multiple hits on Sunday night. 3B Davis Wendzel, 1B Nick Tanielu and SS Ryan Dorow each knocked two. Dorow also recorded the team’s only multi-RBI performance as he sent two runners home with a single in the third inning.
  • E-Train LHP Dallas Keuchel made his second start since joining the team. He went 6.0 innings and allowed three earned runs, all on a home run, two total hits, three walks and five strikeouts.
  • Round Rock finished its series in Sugar Land 1-5, marking the second series loss to the Space Cowboys this season. The Express is now 9-8-3 in series play. The two teams will play two more series to close out the 2022 campaign with one six-game set and one three-game set, both of which will be at Dell Diamond.

Next up: Round Rock heads to Oklahoma City for a six-game series against the Dodgers at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Express RHP Tyson Miller (2-5, 4.85) is scheduled to start on the mound against Los Angeles Dodgers rehabber RHP Dustin May (0-0, 2.00). First pitch for Tuesday’s series opener is set for 7:05 p.m. CT.
