Red Wings Put Up Thirteen Runs, Win Sixth Straight

The Rochester Red Wings (29-19, 74-47) defeated the Omaha Storm Chasers (23-23, 56-64) for the third consecutive night, this time by a score of 13-3. An errant throw off the head of LF Sam Petersen sparked a four-run second inning, and two-run homers from both Petersen and red-hot SS Seaver King contributed to another four-run inning for Rochester in the seventh. Seven pitchers saw time on the hill for the Red Wings, with LHP Matt Krook earning his second win of the season.

DH Cayden Wallace started the second inning with a leadoff single, which was followed up by two additional singles from C Maxwell Romero Jr. and LF Sam Petersen. With no outs and bases loaded, RF Leandro Pineda hit what appeared to be a routine ground ball to Omaha 1B Abraham Toro. In an attempt to turn a double-play, Toro’s throw to second clanked off the head of the sliding Petersen, bounced into left field, and allowed both Wallace and Romero Jr. to score without forfeiting an out on the play. Two pitches later, SS Seaver King hit a two-RBI single to bring home both Petersen and Pineda, quickly doubling the Wings’ lead to 4-0.

Storm Chasers’ nine-hole hitter 2B Peyton Wilson hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning. His third homer of the year trimmed Rochester’s lead to 4-1.

The Omaha offense carried their momentum into the next inning, as Abraham Toro started the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff single. A single and stolen base from CF Carson Roccaforte put two runners in scoring position with one out. A groundout from 3B Josh Rojas scored Toro and cut the lead to 4-2.

DH Cayden Wallace’s second hit of the night was a fifth-inning triple, with Romero Jr. coming up to the dish next. A hard-hit ground ball from the Miami native bounced off the glove of the Omaha first baseman, Toro, granting Wallace enough time to reach home plate and give the Wings a 5-2 lead.

The bottom of the fifth inning began with the second home run in as many at-bats from Omaha’s 2B Peyton Wilson, quickly making it a two-run game once again.

A routine pop fly that would have ended Rochester’s half of the sixth inning popped out of the glove of the Omaha second baseman, Wilson, allowing SS Seaver King to sneak his way over to second. After a stolen base by King on 2B Phillip Glasser’s walk, a hit from 1B Yohandy Morales that just nearly escaped the outstretched Wilson scored King to make it 6-3, bringing the Rochester lead back to three runs.

After a walk drawn by Romero Jr. in the top of the seventh, a high fly-ball from LF Sam Petersen made its way over the left-field wall to make it 8-3 Rochester. RF Leandro Pineda hit a ground-rule double, giving lead-off man Seaver King the opportunity to make yet another splash. The Wake Forest alum did just that, as he smashed a two-run shot to push the lead to 10-3.

CF Trey Lipscomb joined in on the scoring in the eighth inning, hitting a solo home run to the opposite field. His team-leading 26th homer of the season made it 11-3 Rochester.

SS Seaver King wasn’t satisfied with what was already an impressive performance, as he sent another two-run shot to center field for his second of the game and thirteenth of the season.

Making just his second start of the season, RHP Zak Kent struck out a season-high five batters over the first 2.2 innings of the game. He allowed two hits in the process, with one of them being Wilson’s third-inning home run. Left-hander Matt Krook came to the mound next, lasting 1.0 inning with a strikeout and one run allowed on two hits. Entering the game in the fourth inning was RHP Paxton Schultz, who went 1.1 innings with two strikeouts, allowing one run on one hit and walking one batter. Up next from the Rochester bullpen was LHP Carson Palmquist, who walked three batters through 0.2 innings before RHP Eddy Yean came on in relief to put away the sixth-inning, bases-loaded set for Omaha. The Dominican Republic native allowed two hits and struck out one batter over 1.1 innings of work. RHP Justin Lawrence was the sixth arm on the mound for Rochester, pitching one perfect, three-strikeout inning. RHP Gus Varland closed the night with a perfect inning of his own, striking out three batters and sealing the victory.

The Rochester Red Wings Player of the Game is SS Seaver King. The 2024 Nationals’ first-round pick went 4-for-6 at the plate with two home runs, six RBI, and three runs scored. King homered for the fourth consecutive game, and fifth time out of his last six. It is the second time in as many days he has earned Player of the Game honors.

The Red Wings will be back in action tomorrow at 7:35 p.m., as they look to win their fourth straight against the Storm Chasers and clinch their fourth consecutive series win. Taking the mound first for Rochester will be RHP Chandler Champlain in his 17th start of the season. On the other side, Omaha will send out southpaw Ryan Ramsey.
