Rylan Thomas named Appy League Player of the Week

21-year-old collects .526 average, four homers to earn weekly honor

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- The Appalachian League announced Monday that Greeneville Reds 1B Rylan Thomas has been named the circuit's Player of the Week for the time period between July 23-29. GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- The Appalachian League announced Monday that Greeneville Reds 1B Rylan Thomas has been named the circuit's Player of the Week for the time period between July 23-29. This is the second weekly honor for a Greeneville Red player this season, joining RHP Josiah Gray who was named the league's Pitcher of the Week for the period between July 2-8.
During the week, the 21-year-old lead the Appy League in batting average (.526), extra-base hits (7), total bases (25), home runs (4), on-base percentage (.654), slugging percentage (1.316), and OPS (1.970) in six games. Thomas was also tied for first in runs scored (8) and second in RBI (8) while ranking second in walks (8) and fourth in hits (10).
The award is the first of Thomas' professional career. The honor is the first by a Greeneville position player since INF Roman Garcia was named the league's Player of the Week for August 7-13 of 2017.
Entering the Monday, the Winter Garden, Fla. native was second in the circuit in slugging percentage (.651), tied for second in home runs (9), tied for third in walks (28), and fifth in slugging percentage (.452). Additionally, Thomas leads the Appalachian League with the best home-run-per-at-bat ratio, averaging one every 9.56 at-bats.
Thomas was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 26th round (769th overall) of the 2018 MLB Draft out of the University of Central Florida.
After Monday's off day, Greeneville will head to Kingsport to open up a three-game series against the Mets. RHP Lyon Richardson (0-3, 7.11 ERA) - Cincinnati's No. 20 prospect according to MLB.com - is expected to take the mound for the G-Reds in the lid-lifter. The K-Mets have not yet named their starter for that evening's affair.
The G-Reds Pre-Game Show will kick off the broadcast at 6:15 p.m. ET, leading up to the 6:30 p.m. ET start at Hunter Wright Stadium. Tuesday night's contest can be heard on GreenevilleReds.com or via the TuneIn Radio and MiLB First Pitch apps. 
Following the three-game road trip, the Reds will return home on Friday, August 3, to open up a three-contest series against the Johnson City Cardinals. It will be a Firework Friday at Pioneer Park as all fans are encouraged to stay after the game, as they will be treated to a spectacular postgame fireworks display following the final out.
