STOCKTON, Calif. – The Ports (0-1) dropped their opening night matchup to San Jose (1-0) by a score of 12-8. The Giants held off multiple comeback efforts from Stockton on the way to their first win of the season.

The game started with two scoreless innings and six combined strikeouts before the San Jose offense would get the scoring started. Hayden Jatczak tripled in the third, then scored on a single from Andy Polanco. Jhonny Level would add another with an RBI-single of his own, and an early 2-0 Giants lead. San Jose added two more in the fourth on a balk and wild pitch, then one more in the fifth on a Rodrigo Barajas Jr. double, making it 5-0.

Carlos Pacheco got Stockton on the board for the first time in the fifth with a sacrifice fly. Then the Ports tried to take advantage of five walks in the sixth inning, but got caught stealing at the plate on what would have been a wild pitch. Max Durrington was still able to draw a bases-loaded walk to close the gap and make it 5-3. Dylan Carter entered for the Giants and got a much needed third out to hold the line.

Barajas Jr. could feel the Ports trying to come back and delivered a two-run home run to right center field, once again giving San Jose a comfortable lead, 7-3.

Stockton put something together again in the seventh, a Breyson Guedez two-RBI single made it just a one run game, 7-6. Carter once again held the lead, this time with two strikeouts to finish the frame.

Hayden Jatczak came through again for San Jose in the eighth, a three-run home run made it 10-6 and put it out of reach for Stockton. Jatczak’s night was not over, he singled home another run in the ninth making it 12-6.

The Ports found a bright spot in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI double out of Guedez and a Bryan Arendt sacrifice fly, bringing the game to a final score of 12-8.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Breyson Guedez led the Ports offensively, finishing 2/4 with three RBI and a BB.

Cesar Gonzalez reached base four times with three BB and a HBP. Gonzalez would come around to score three times.

Felix Castro got the Ports out of trouble in the eighth, with 0.2 innings pitched including a strikeout.
