Sandlin's Complete Game Shutout Highlights Charlotte's DH Sweep

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Charlotte Knights tasted victory, not once but twice, on Saturday evening with a double-header sweep of the Memphis Redbirds. The Knights received an extra-inning walkoff single from Dru Baker that sealed the first game 5-4. David Sandlin shined on the mound in Game Two and his complete game performance lifted the home team to a 2-0 shutout win.

In the opener, the Knights scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Korey Lee drove in a pair of runs with a single into left and Joey Wiemer added an RBI single to the mix. Memphis rallied back with a four-spot in the top of the fifth, but Junior Perez’s solo Home Run drew Charlotte level.

The game remained tied through the scheduled seven-innings and neither team was able to score their automatic runner in the eighth. Once Memphis was held without a run in the top of the ninth, Baker capitalized with an RBI single into right field that plated the game-winning run from second.

In the nightcap, the spotlight belonged to Sandlin. The Knights’ starting pitcher hurled a complete game shutout that included a season-high nine strikeouts. Sandlin is only the second Charlotte pitcher to fire a complete game this season.

Offensively, Wiemer delivered once again. The outfielder broke a scoreless tie with a 439-foot solo Home Run in his first at-bat. Charlotte pushed their second run across on a balk that was contested by the Redbird’s coaching staff and ultimately led to their skipper earning an ejection.

Both teams will take the field on Sunday for the series finale. The first pitch is set for 5:05pm ET at Truist Field.
