Sea Dogs rally falls short, lose 8-6 in Bowie

Bowie, Md. - The Bowie Baysox (62-57) scored four early runs off Kevin McAvoy, and held on to beat the Portland Sea Dogs (57-60), 8-6, on Sunday afternoon at Prince George's Stadium. Portland dropped two of three in the series, but finished the roadtrip at 4-2.

The Sea Dogs battled late in the game, scoring two runs in the final two innings. In the ninth, an error prolonged the game, giving Cole Sturgeon one more at-bat. Sturgeon hit a two-run homer off Scott McGough (save #8) for the final runs of the game. Sturgeon tied a career-high with four hits.
McAvoy (5-7) suffered the loss, allowing seven hits and four runs over five innings pitched. Bowie's Lucas Long (8-5) earned the win, giving up two runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings pitched.
Bowie built their 4-0 lead by scoring all their runs with two outs. In the first, D.J. Stewart and Aderlin Rodriguez had RBI singles. In the second, Austin Hays delivered a two-run single.
Portland received two out magic to close the gap to 4-2. Chad De La Guerra (3-for-5) put the 'Dogs on the board with a single and Sturgeon provided a two-out RBI hit in the sixth.
Bowie scored three times off Jacob Dahlstrand in the seventh inning. Anthony Santander ripped a home run to right, Audrey Perez and Erick Salcedo had run-scoring singles. The Sea Dogs answered in the eighth on RBI singles from Danny Bethea (3-for-4) and De La Guerra.
Stewart homered off Taylor Grover in the eighth to put Bowie in front 8-4. Portland had 14 hits on Sunday afternoon, raising their team average to .270 (2nd behind Bowie).
The Portland Sea Dogs are off on Monday and open up a three-game series with the Altoona Curve (Pirates affiliate) on Tuesday night, with a 7:00 PM first pitch from Hadlock Field.
