Sea Dogs to host A League of Their Own night- July 6

Portland, Maine- In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the movie A League of Their Own, the Portland Sea Dogs will host A League of Their Own night, presented by Casco Federal Credit Union, at Hadlock Field on Thursday, July 6th when the Sea Dogs host the New Hampshire Cats


Portland, Maine- In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the movie A League of Their Own, the Portland Sea Dogs will host A League of Their Own night, presented by Casco Federal Credit Union, at Hadlock Field on Thursday, July 6th when the Sea Dogs host the New Hampshire Cats at 7:00 PM.

As part of the night, the Sea Dogs will be wearing specially designed A League of Their Own jerseys, which will be auctioned off to benefit Girls on the Run. Girls on the Run is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams. The organization teaches life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games. 
Camden, Maine native Maxine Drinkwater Simmons who played in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) in 1954 will take part in the pre-game ceremonies. Simmons was a first and second basemen for the South Bend Blue Sox.  
Additionally, the Sea Dogs will be joined by Dr. Kat Williams. Kat is a Professor of Women's Sport History at Marshall University, author, lifelong baseball fan, and former shortstop. It is her sincere belief that she accomplished all of the former goals because of the latter. She has dedicated many years to the preservation of women's baseball history. Her book, The All-American Girls after the AAGPBL: How playing Pro Ball Shaped Their Lives was just published and her second book, "From the Streets of Havana; Isabel "Lefty" Alvarez" will be out in 2019. President, International Women's Baseball Center. Kat is frequently asked to speak on the history of women's sports and how access to sport positively effects the lives of girls and women.
Williams will throw out a ceremonial first-pitch and will be available to sign copies of her book, The All-American Girls after the AAGPBL.
The night will also include movie clips, music, and trivia.
The movie, A League of Their Own, is a fictional story about the real life All American Girls Professional Baseball League. Released on July 1, 1992 and directed by Penny Marshall, the film stars Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, and Rosie O' Donnell. In 2012, A League of Their Own was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.
