SeaWolves overpower Patriots in series opener

Erie, Pennsylvania - Three home runs from the Erie SeaWolves (20-10) carried them to an 8-2 win over the Somerset Patriots (20-10) in Tuesday’s series-opener at UPMC Park.

Drew Ward (3) opened the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the second, with a two-run shot from Josh Lester (5) in the fourth and a two-run homer from Andre Lipcius (2) in the eighth leading the way offensively for Erie.

The lone Patriots runs came on a two-run blast from Dermis Garcia (11) in the seventh inning. Garcia is now tied for the league lead with 11 home runs.

Somerset starting pitcher Glenn Otto (L, 2-2) allowed six runs and struck out 10 batters over a season-high 6.2 innings of work to take the loss. Erie starter Ricardo Pinto (W, 3-1) earned the win after he yielded two runs over 6.2 innings pitched.

The Patriots and SeaWolves continue their series Wednesday night. Left-handed pitcher JP Sears (3-0, 2.70 ERA) takes the mound for Somerset against Paul Richan (0-0, 6.97 ERA) for Erie. First pitch at UPMC Park is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
