Second quality start for Jewell, but BayBears fall in finale

PEARL, Miss. (May 12, 2017) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, scored a late run to avoid being shut out but lost 6-1 to the Mississippi Braves in the series finale Friday night at Trustmark Park.
Despite taking the loss, Jake Jewell (1-2) recorded his second straight quality start. He allowed two runs on four hits in six innings pitched. In his first appearance with the BayBears, Michael Dimock struck out the side in the seventh inning.
Mike Soroka (3-3) took a perfect game into the seventh inning, but he gave up a one-out single to David Fletcher . Soroka held the BayBears (14-21) to one hit for the second time this season and notched five strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. Zach Gibbons scored the lone run for Mobile on Fletcher's groundout in the ninth.
Travis Demeritte hit a solo home run in the first inning to give the Braves (18-17) an early edge. It was Demeritte's third home run of the series. Carlos Franco accounted for half of Mississippi's runs batted in, going 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Forrestt Allday went 1-for-3 with a walk to extend his on-base streak to 18 games.
The BayBears begin a five-game home series Saturday at 7:05 p.m. CT against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. Right-hander Alex Klonowski (1-2, 3.54 ERA) is slated to make the start against righty Severino González (0-2, 3.28 ERA) for Jacksonville.
