Summary
Akron's Joe Sever hit a walk-off infield single with the bases loaded to score Mike Papi in the bottom of the ninth to beat Hartford 5-4 Thursday afternoon at Canal Park.
Turning Point
After Hartford tied the game in the top half of the ninth, Akron responded with a leadoff single by outfielder Mike Papi. The next batter Tyler Krieger was hit by a pitch and later Todd Hankins was intentionally walked to load the bases. With two outs, Joe Sever hit a groundball up the middle in which Hartford shortstop Anthony Phillips made a diving stop. He quickly shuffled to second base for the force out but Todd Hankins was safe on the play and the winning run came home.
Winging It
Akron's Nick Pasquale overcame a rough first inning in which he surrendered three runs to go on to four consecutive scoreless innings not allowing a hit. Pasquale struck out seven and only walked one in five innings. Hartford starter Luis Niebla left after retiring the first two batters of the game with a leg injury. Troy Neiman entered in relief and gave up four runs on three hits. In relief of Pasquale, Jordan Milbrath threw three scoreless innings allowing just one hit, one walk and also struck out three. Leandro Linares entered for a save situation in the ninth with a 4-3 lead and gave up a run to blow the save but was also the winning pitcher.
Duck Tales
The RubberDucks offense broke through against Neiman in the third inning when Luigi Rodriguez doubled and reached third by an error on Hartford's center fielder Omar Carrizales. Todd Hankins then drove in Rodriguez with a sacrifice fly. Following a walk by Joe Sever, a hit by pitch by Yu Chang and another walk drawn by Bobby Bradley, Eric Haase hit a two-run single. Mike Papi would then add another RBI single to plate four runs in the third inning. Mike Papi swung a hot bat in the three game series going 6-10.
