TODAY'S GAME: The Shuckers look to take the series opener against Montgomery as they return to MGM Park Wednesday night...Taylor Jungmann makes his third start of the season for the Shuckers.
VENTURA VEXED, SHUCKERS SQUANDER SWEEP: After winning their first four games at Pensacola, the Shuckers lost an opportunity for their second five-game sweep in team history by dropping their series finale 3-1 Monday night...Angel Ventura delivered a quality start, but allowed two runs in six innings...former Shucker Austin Ross shut down Biloxi's bats for the second time this season, tossing seven shutout innings and striking out nine...Dustin DeMuth came less than a foot away from a game-tying home run in the eighth inning with the Shuckers trailing 2-0, but his fly to right-center hit off the top of the wall and went for an RBI double.
HOME WOES: Despite a 9-6 road record that is tied for second-best in the Southern League, the Shuckers have gone just 2-8 through their first two series at MGM Park...at 6-9, the Mississippi Braves have the next-worst mark in the league.
AGAINST THE BISCUITS: The Shuckers are 11-13 all-time against the Biscuits, including a 3-2 mark at River­walk Stadium to start the 2017 season...they are 4-5 when playing the Biscuits at MGM Park.
DANGEROUS DEMUTH: First baseman and outfielder Dustin DeMuth is leading the team with a .279 batting average...he also has an active 12-game on-base streak, which is the best on the team this season...his active five-game hitting streak is two shy of Mauricio Dubón for the longest on the Shuckers this season.
GRAND THEFT: Infielder Mauricio Dubon leads the Southern League with 11 stolen bases this season, in­cluding four in his April 15 game against Pensacola...the team's 33 stolen bases rank second in the Southern League...meanwhile, catchers Jacob Nottingham and Dustin Houle have combined to throw out 10 of 20 (50%) of base-stealers this season.
ON THIS DATE IN SHUCKERS HISTORY: 2015 - Yadiel Rivera, Kyle Wren, Orlando Arcia and Michael Reed set a season-high by stealing four bases in a 4-3 victory over Mobile.
A LOOK BACK: The Shuckers finished 2016 with a 72-67 record, just missing out on the playoffs a year after making it to the Southern League championship...they finished 1.5 games back of Pensacola in the first half with a 39-30 record, and despite a last-place (33-37) finish in the second half finished just 1.5 games behind Mississippi for second place overall in the South Division...RHP Brandon Woodruff joined the Shuckers on May 16th and led the Southern League in WHIP (1.04), opponent batting average (.211), strikeouts per nine innings (9.82), and fewest base runners per nine innings (9.66)...Woodruff led all of Minor League Baseball in strikeouts with 173, and led the Brewers organization in starts and innings pitched on route to being named Brewers Minor League Pitcher of the Year...pitchers Tristan Archer, Josh Hader and Stephen Peterson, outfielders Brett Phillips and Kyle Wren, and Jacob Nottingham were named Southern League All-Stars in 2016.
ROSTER RUNDOWN: 17 of the 25 active players on the Shuckers roster have previously spent time in Biloxi... OF Michael Reed returns to Biloxi after splitting 2016 between Milwaukee and Triple-A Colorado Springs...five nations are represented on the current roster (United States, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, South Africa, Canada)... Jorge López represented Team Puerto Rico in the 2017 World Baseball Classic.
PROSPECTING: Five members of MLB.com Pipeline Brewers Top 30 are playing in Biloxi...RHP Luis Ortiz (#4), Mauricio Dubon (#9), Jorge Lopez (#13), Jacob Nottingham (#14) and Michael Reed (#27) all made the list.
BROTHERS GUERRERO: Manager Mike Guerrero and hitting coach Sandy Guerrero are the second coaching brother combination in affiliated pro baseball (Stu and Stan Cliburn, Twins org 2001-2008). The Dominican duo's father was Epy Guerrero, the famed Dominican scout who signed more than 50 players including Carlos Delgado, Cesar Cedeño, Tony Fernandez and most recently Alcides Escobar. Brother Fred Guerrero is a Twins scout who signed Miguel Sanó, Danny Santana and Jorge Polanco. Mike picked up his 1,000th career victory on Thursday, July 14, 2016 in Biloxi's 3-2 walk-off win over Birmingham at MGM Park.
