Clinton, IA (June 2, 2018) - In their first shutout win since April 13th the Clinton LmberKings dropped the Peoria Chiefs 5-0 on Saturday night at Ashford University Field to move back into first place in the Western Division. LumberKings (31-24) pitchers Clay Chandler and Sam Delaplane combined to blank the Chiefs (31-25) for the team's third shutout win of the season.
The first runs of the night came across in the bottom of the second inning against Chiefs starter Johan Oviedo. Ryan Costello started the rally with a single to center and was then followed by a Dimas Ojeda walk. With runners at first and second Lois Boyd singled through the right side of the infield to score Costello and move Ojeda to third. A wild pitch from Oviedo then brought home the second run of the inning for Clinton, putting them on top for good.
Oviedo (1-5) then set down the next seven LumberKings before running into trouble during his final inning out, the bottom of the fifth. Nine LumberKings batters came up in the inning to score three runs without tallying a single hit during the rally. Oviedo and Peoria reliever Andrew Summerville combined to walk five batters in the inning in what became Clinton's largest rally of the night.
Chandler (2-1) started for Clinton and was sharp in his fourth start of the season. He set a new professional career high for innings pitched with 6.1 frames worked and picked up his second win of the season.
Chandler stranded six base runners during his time out, allowing no runs on six hits while walking one and striking out two.
Sam Delaplane came on in relief of Chandler with one out in the seventh inning and went the rest of the way for the LumberKings. Over his 2.2 innings of work, he did not allow a hit while walking two and striking out four.
The win snaps the Chiefs winning streak at six games and moves Clinton back into first place with the LumberKings now given a chance to take their fourth straight series with a win on Sunday.
The LumberKings will conclude their home-stand with the finale of a three-game set with the Peoria Chiefs on Sunday afternoon.
