BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (July 12, 2017) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, let a four-run lead slip away but scored six runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Birmingham Barons 11-5 in the series finale Wednesday night at Regions Field.
With the game tied 5-5 in the top of the ninth, the BayBears (40-48 overall, 10-9 second half) put runners on the corners against Tanner Banks (0-3) with no outs. Brandon Brennan entered the game, and Michael Hermosillo greeted him with an RBI double to put Mobile in front 6-5. Three batters later, Sherman Johnson hit a two-run double, and Josè Briceño followed with a three-run homer.
The BayBears plated four runs on five hits in the top of the first inning against Miguel González, making his second Major League rehabilitation start. Matt Thaiss and Johnson both hit RBI singles, and Brendon Sanger 's first Double-A hit was a two-run double. Thaiss went 3-for-4 in the game and scored three runs.
With Mobile leading 5-2 in the seventh inning, Birmingham (33-56, 7-13) plated three runs against Alex Klonowski to tie the game. Courtney Hawkins hit a two-run homer, and Eddy Alvarez drove in Trey Michalczewski with a single.
Greg Mahle (3-0) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win for the BayBears.
