Beloit entered the 8th inning leading by one but relented the lead and fell 7-5 to the Cubs on Wednesday night at Four Winds Field in South Bend.
Beloit started the scoring early by jumping all over Chicago’s 2021 first round draft pick Jordan Wicks. After Cody Morissette singled in the first, Bennett Hostetler followed with a 2-run homer.
On the other side of the scorecard, Beloit starter Patrick Monteverde struck out the first five batters he faced before surrendering a run with two outs in the 2nd inning.
The Sky Carp tacked on two more against Wicks in the 3rd, courtesy of an RBI knock from Dalvy Rosario and an error by the left fielder.
The three-run lead didn’t last long, however, as Monteverde allowed a 3-run blast to Alexander Canario in the bottom of the frame to knot the game at 4.
The deadlock remained until the 8th, when Rosario came through again with a single to score Victor Mesa Jr. from second base to hand Beloit a 5-4 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, things went awry for Sky Carp righty Robinson Martinez, who allowed a lead off double, and then struck out Canario before allowing four straight runners to reach – highlighted by back-to-back RBI singles from Matt Mervis and Ed Howard to put the Cubs in the driver's seat.
Nasim Nunez drew a two-out walk in the top of the 9th, but the Sky Carp couldn’t muster anything more, and dropped to 2-9 on the season.
Beloit and South Bend will be back at it tomorrow night at 7:05 ET, with Hunter Perdue set to start for the Sky Carp. Fans can listen to the action on the Big Radio app.
