Kyle Wren had five RBI to lead the Colorado Springs Sky Sox to a 10-2 win over the New Orleans Baby Cakes on Saturday night.
The win moved Colorado Springs within a victory of clinching the franchise's first playoff appearance since 1995 and first division championship since 1992.
Nate Orf gave the Sky Sox a quick lead with a two-out solo home run in the first, and Colorado Springs tacked on three more runs in the second, capped by Wren's two-run single.
The Baby Cakes sliced the deficit in half with two runs in the bottom of the frame, including one on a sacrifice fly by Austin Nola. But the 'Cakes were unable to cash in on a bases-loaded opportunity in the fifth, and Colorado Springs responded with Mauricio Dubon's RBI single in the sixth to take a three-run lead.
Chris Colabello homered off Brandon Cunniff as part of a two-run seventh, and Wren cleared the bases with a three-run double in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Bubba Derby (5-0) scattered two runs and seven hits in five innings to get the win, limiting New Orleans to one hit in nine at-bats with runners in scoring position.
Keyvius Sampson (5-5) took the loss despite pitching a season-high 5 2/3 innings, allowing five runs and five hits. He walked four and struck out four.
The 'Cakes wrap up the brief homestand on Sunday at 1 p.m.
