The Quad Cities River Bandits could not score in two extra inning opportunities and ended up falling 4-3 to the Beloit Snappers on a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th inning on Saturday night at Pohlman Field. The loss dropped the River Bandits record to 4-3 on the current eight-game road trip.
The Snappers took their first lead of the series against River Bandits starter Peter Solomon in the fifth inning. With two outs Trace Loehr reached on an infield single. He raced around to score on an ensuing double to left from Jesus Lopez. The Snappers lead grew to 2-0 in the seventh on a two out RBI single to left from Mickey McDonald.
In the top of the eighth, the River Bandits found a way to break through against reliever Nick Highberger. Roman Garcia started the rally with a one-out single up the middle. Bryan De La Cruz followed with a base hit of his own and there were two on base. Jonathan Arauz worked a walk to load the bases before Michael Papierski also walked to force in a run. Miguelangel Sierra tied the game with his sharp single into right. After a Beloit pitching change, Colton Shaver lifted a sacrifice fly into left field, allowing Arauz to tag up and score to give the Bandits a 3-2 advantage.
That lead was short-lived as the Snappers bounced back in the bottom half. With Hunter Hargrove at first base and two outs, Jordan Devencenzi lined a base hit into center field. Corey Julks made a sliding attempt to catch the ball and the ball bounced over his glove and into deep center field for a double that allowed Hargrove to score and evened the score.
Neither team could advance the runner from second base in the tenth inning. After the River Bandits also came up empty in the 11th, Beloit opened the bottom half with a bunt single from Trace Loehr. The bases were loaded on an intentional walk to Jesus Lopez, bringing Nick Allen to the plate. The shortstop hit a shallow fly ball to right field, but with pinch-runner Skyler Weber tagging up, the throw from De La Cruz was off target and resulted in a walk-off win for the Snappers.
Solomon tossed 5.0 innings and allowed one run on four hits. He walked two and struck out four. Dariel Aquino followed with 2.0 innings during which he allowed one run two hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Adam Bleday took the loss, surrendering two runs, one earned, in 3.0 innings on the mound. He struck out four and issued three walks. Carlos Sanabria allowed the sacrifice fly to the only batter he faced.
The River Bandits finished the contest with just six hits. Sierra was the only player who registered two.
