The partnership between the Pensacola Blue Wahoos and the Andrews Institute has been a natural one from the outset.
A minor league franchise with its well-earned reputation in Major League Baseball linked with a world renowned leader in sports medicine.
For both entities, it has brought mutual benefits.
Orthopaedic surgeon Juliet De Campos has been the Blue Wahoos medical director since the team's inaugural 2012 season. She spent a week in March visiting with the Minnesota Twins and their spring training site at the CenturyLink Sports Complex in Fort Myers.
"The Twins said we were the first organization to have a doctor from their minor league affiliate visit them," said Blue Wahoos team president Jonathan Griffith. "They had never had that kind participation, so those kinds of things go a long way."
The fortunate aspect of having Dr. James Andrews and his talented team of physicians, whose medical care is held in highest regard throughout the sports world, located only a few miles away in Gulf Breeze has been a mutual benefit.
"From a sponsorship standpoint with Baptist Health Care and Doctor Andrews, I know it was a no brainer," said Sean Sullivan, the marketing manager for the Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. "We have a great interest in sports medicine and feel a strong obligation to help athletes at all levels, not just in our area. So it made perfect sense for us to be a sponsor with the Blue Wahoos."
In addition to having the Andrews Institute sign on the stadium's video board above right field as well as the back page of the game program, which is distributed free to fans at each game, the partnership has helped spread awareness.
Sullivan said the sponsorship has helped reinforce that Andrews Institute is not just for athletes or sports teams, nor that it is only available for residents in Gulf Breeze and surrounding area. Rather, it is available for all.
"We are able to continually push the message that Andrews Institute providers are available at multiple locations throughout Northwest Florida," Sullivan said. "That, to us, is very important, that we provide access to the same level of care that patients would get in Gulf Breeze throughout Pensacola.
"When I got here, the two barriers we focused on trying to overcome were perceptual access and geographic access. I think all the different ways we are able to push that is very important to us, whether it is with events, an ad in the program, or a sign on the video board."
The partnership has enabled Andrews Institute to utilize the stadium and Blue Wahoos games to provide tickets for staff, employees, guests and host events at the ballpark.
"It's been an amazing team-member engagement opportunity for us to have those tickets," he said. "It gives us an opportunity to have those tickets available for our team members to enjoy, but also an opportunity for us to have some of those sponsored days to connect with a community of people who see the game.
"That's important to us. The venue has provided a huge opportunity to have some amazing events at Blue Wahoos games."
