Stockton Romps Over San Jose 19-6

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Ports (22-17, 49-56) blew out the Giants (21-18, 58-47) on Thursday night, racking up a season-high 19 runs to take a 2-1 lead in the six-game series with San Jose.

The Ports offense set a season high in RBIs with 17, tied their season high in home runs with four, were hit by a season high six pitches, and had their second-most total bases on the year with 28.

The scoring got started in the first when eighth overall pick Drew Burress smacked his second professional home run in his first three games with the Ports to give Stockton a 2-0 lead.

A nine-run second inning started with a bases-loaded single by Max Durrington to go up 3-0. Michael Brooks belted a grand slam (7) to left immediately after to give the Ports a 7-0 advantage. Bobby Blandford doubled (14) to make it 8-0, and new catcher Alex Sosa barely missed a grand slam of his own for a sac fly and a 9-0 lead. Gavin Turley walked with the bases loaded and Edgar Montero singled home a run, and the Ports had an 11-0 lead after the top of the second.

Shotaro Morii almost got through two scoreless innings as the Ports opener, but three singles chased him from the second with two outs as his pitch count climbed close to his limit. Jackson Nove entered the game and allowed a grand slam out to right to Giants top prospect Josuar Gonzalez (2) to make it an 11-4 game.

A Nate Nankil RBI single up the middle made it 12-4 before Sosa cleared the fence this time with a three-run blast (1) for a 15-4 lead. An error at short scored another run before Blandford’s second double (15) put the Ports up 17-4. Montero capped Stockton’s scoring with a two-run homer (10) for the Ports 19-4 advantage. Nove would only allow two runs over 4.1 innings to earn the win.

UP NEXT: Game four is scheduled for a 7:00 PM first pitch, with LHP Jordan Gottesman (5-1, 4.65) starting versus RHP Donny Troconis (0-5, 6.52) for Stockton.
