STOCKTON, Calif. - The Visalia Rawhide scored two runs in the first inning, and never looked back in a convincing 9-2 victory over the Stockton Ports at Banner Island Ballpark.
Brendan Butler (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing four runs in three and a third innings. Jake Bray came on in relief and tossed three and two thirds shutout innings, before Brandon Marsonek gave up two home runs late in the game to secure the win for Visalia (11-7).
Rawhide right-hander Emilio Vargas was electric, using 85 pitches to strike out a season-high eight across five shutout innings. Three relievers, Miguel Aguilar, Kevin Ginkel, and Tommy Eveld closed out the game, combining to allow just four hits in the final four frames.
The Ports scored their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. Dairon Blanco walked to lead off the inning before Jonah Heim singled to put runners on first and second. Eric Mariñez grounded into a force out, and with runners on the corners, Edwin Diaz's sacrifice fly scored Blanco. Back-to-back singles by Jason Goldstein and Brallan Perez scored Marinez, but Collin Theroux struck out to end the game and the rally.
All California League teams are off tomorrow, Monday, April 23. The Ports travel to Rancho Cucamonga and Lake Elsinore for a six game road trip beginning Tuesday, April 24. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
