Stripers’ 5-1 Lead Evaporates in 6-5 Loss to Indianapolis

Brett Sears turns in quality start in final outing, but Gwinnett suffers third straight loss

LAWRENCEVILLE, Georgia – The Gwinnett Stripers (36-35, 74-71) got a quality start from Brett Sears and rode a 5-1 lead into the seventh inning, but the Indianapolis Indians (42-29, 73-73) scored five runs over the final three innings to snatch a 6-5 win on Wednesday afternoon at Gwinnett Field. LAWRENCEVILLE, Georgia – The Gwinnett Stripers (36-35, 74-71) got a quality start from Brett Sears and rode a 5-1 lead into the seventh inning, but the Indianapolis Indians (42-29, 73-73) scored five runs over the final three innings to snatch a 6-5 win on Wednesday afternoon at Gwinnett Field. Indianapolis leads the final series of the year 2-0.

Decisive Plays: The scoring opened the same way it did on Tuesday, with a Duce Gourson solo home run (5) in the fourth inning to make it 1-0 for Indianapolis. The Stripers went ahead in the bottom of the inning when Brett Wisely lifted a two-run shot (11) to right. Gwinnett added three runs over the next two innings, highlighted by a two-run double by Maverick Handley for the largest Stripers lead of the game at 5-1. Indianapolis cut into the lead to 5-4 with three runs in the seventh, including a two-run double by Nick Cimillo. In the ninth, Indianapolis plated two more runs off Blake Burkhalter (L, 3-2) to push back ahead at 6-5. The Stripers went down in order in the ninth for a third straight loss.

Key Contributors: Wisely (2-for-4, homer, 2 RBIs) notched his second multi-hit performance, while Handley added two RBIs as well (1-for-2, double). Sears delivered his third quality start in five outings with Gwinnett this year (6.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 HR, 1 BB, 8 SO). For Indianapolis, Gourson (2-for-4, homer, 2 RBIs) drove in the winning run. Landon Tompkins (W, 2-0) and Noah Murdock (S, 1) held the Stripers scoreless over the final 3.1 innings.

Noteworthy: The Stripers are now 14-30 in one-run games this season and 14-19 in day games. Sears owns a 1.73 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, .191 BAA, and 11.77 SO/9.0 IP ratio over his five starts with Gwinnett this season.
