VANCOUVER, BC – The Canadians closed out their series with Tri-City (LAA) with a 4-2 win in the final game of their home series on Sunday afternoon to keep pace atop the Northwest League second half standings.
The Canadians got the scoring started in the second inning after hits from Ryan Sprock and Austin Smith led off the inning. They would plate a run and take the lead 1-0 following a Jean Joseph sacrifice fly. In the fifth, the Dust Devils cashed in on an RBI single to tie the game at one.
Troy Guthrie and Dust Devils starter Chase Shores dueled in this one, with the former tossing five innings of one-run ball and settling for a no-decision. He allowed three hits and two walks while punching out five.
After Tri-City took the lead 2-1 in the 6th inning, the C’s would knot things up in the 7th. Max Viera led off the inning with a triple, later scoring on a sacrifice fly from Dariel Ramon to tie the game at two.
Reece Fields (W, 1) entered in the seventh and pitched two perfect innings of relief with one strikeout. He would collect his first professional win and set up a dramatic finish.
With the game tied in the 8th, the C’s would clutch up to take the lead for good. With two runners on and two outs, Viera stepped up to the plate and delivered his second consecutive triple – and third in the last 24 hours – to plate two and give Vancouver a 4-2 advantage.
Jack Eshleman (S, 3) entered in the ninth and closed things out, working a double play ball before inducing a pop out to end the game. With the win, the Canadians now own a share of first place in the Northwest League second half standings, pending the results of the out-of-town games later this evening.
After an off day, the C’s will hit the road and play their next game Tuesday night in a pivotal series against the Eugene Emeralds. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
