MOBILE, Ala. (May 15, 2018) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, exploded for 11 runs on 15 hits in an 11-5 win over the Birmingham Barons to clinch a series victory Tuesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
Jose Suarez recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings pitched. He gave up two runs on five hits and issued just one walk. Matt Custred (1-2) earned the win in relief, tossing 1 1/3 scoreless, hitless frames.
The BayBears (19-19) plated 11 runs on 15 hits to provide plenty of support for the pitching staff. A five-run fourth inning against Jordan Guerrero (1-4) gave Mobile an early 6-0 lead. Despite Birmingham (18-21) loading the bases three times and staying within striking distance, a four-run seventh inning put the game out of reach.
Jose Rojas went 4-for-4 at the plate, driving in a run and scoring twice. It was the second time Rojas has recorded four hits in the last five games. Brennon Lund went 2-for-5, his sixth consecutive multi-hit game. Matt Thaiss , Connor Justus , Brendon Sanger , and Riley Unroe all drove in two runs.
The BayBears wrap up the five-game home series against Birmingham Wednesday at 11:05 a.m. Angels No. 10 prospect Jesus Castillo (4-2, 3.06 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against southpaw Ian Clarkin (3-4, 6.45 ERA) for the Barons.
