Express Break Out for a Six-Run Fifth Inning on Saturday

ROUND ROCK, Texas – The Round Rock Express (34-31) snapped their six-game losing streak and defeated the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (28-37) by a final score of 8-5 on Saturday night at Dell Diamond. The Express bounced back from a 5-0 deficit in the fifth inning.

RHP Yerry Rodriguez (1-0, 5.06) earned the win for Round Rock after a 1.2-inning performance out of the bullpen. He did not allow a run, issued one walk and struck out three. Sugar Land reliever LHP Zac Rosscup (2-0, 2.31) earned the loss after 1.0-inning and one earned run on two hits. He struck out two.

RHP Ryder Ryan collected his first save of the year. He tossed a scoreless ninth frame and did not allow a hit.

Along the Train Tracks:

  • Sugar Land pounced on their first scoring opportunity in the fourth inning. RHP Cole Winn issued a leadoff walk to SS David Hensley. After he retired CF Pedro Leon, Winn issued another walk to RF Dillon Thomas. C Korey Lee hooked a three-run home run to left field and the Space Cowboys led 3-0.
  • Sugar Land plated two more runs in the fifth frame. LF Corey Julks doubled to start the inning. 1B Enmanuel Valdez singled to score Julks. Valdez came home to score later in the inning on a RBI double from Leon and the Space Cowboys held a 5-0 advantage.
  • The Round Rock attack battled back in the bottom of the fifth. SS Davis Wendzel singled, RF Elier Hernandez walked and C Jack Kruger singled to load the bases. 2B Nash Knight drilled a double to score two runs and the Express trailed 5-2.
  • Sugar Land LHP Zac Rosscup entered in the fifth inning with the bases loaded and nobody out. He retired the first two batters he faced, but LF Willie Calhoun hit a bases clearing double to tie the score at five. After a wild pitch advanced Calhoun to third, 3B Diosbel Arias ripped a single and the Express led 6-5.
  • RF Elier Hernandez reached base on an error to start the sixth inning. CF Bubba Thompson came to the dish with two outs and hit a line drive to center field. Leon dove for it and it rolled by him to the fence. Thompson collected an inside-the-park home run and Round Rock extended their lead to 8-5. The Express bullpen secured the final 12 outs for the victory.

E-Train Excerpts:

  • CF Bubba Thompson hit the second inside-the-park home run of the season for Round Rock. The first one of the year came off the bat of INF Ryan Dorow against the Reno Aces on May 8.
  • 2B Nash Knight and DH Willie Calhoun each went 2-for-4 with a double. Knight finished with two RBI while Calhoun had three RBI.
  • RHP Yerry Rodriguez, RHP Tyson Miller and RHP Ryder Ryan did not allow a run out of the bullpen. Rodriguez tossed 1.2 innings, Miller went 2.0 innings and Ryan posted a 1.0 scoreless frame.

Next up: Round Rock returns on Sunday afternoon for the series finale against Sugar Land at 1:05 p.m. Express RHP Spencer Howard (0-2, 4.91) is slated to make the start up against Space Cowboys RHP Shawn Dubin (1-4, 6.97).
