A Tuesday night Wolff Stadium crowd of 6,196 saw San Antonio complete a four-game sweep of Corpus Christi with an 8-4 win.
The Missions entered Tuesday's finale in search of their second sweep of their I-37 rivals this season. San Diego lefty Christian Friedrich got the ball in his second rehab outing with San Antonio. Friedrich went two for the Missions, allowing just one run on three hits and two walks, while striking out three. The Hooks' tally against Friedrich came in the second on an Antonio Nunez single to right.
Still trailing 1-0 entering the third, San Antonio's offense came alive in a massive way against Corpus Christi starter Josh James. Catcher Stephen McGee led off the frame with a double to right center. James proceeded to walk both Auston Bousfield and Luis Urías to load the bases. That brought up Noah Perio, who put the Missions ahead with a two-run ground rule double to right. San Antonio tacked on two more following a José Rondón groundout and Franmil Reyes single to right. After Ty France singled to left, the Hooks pulled James (3-3). His replacement Riley Ferrell did not fare much better.
Riley's first batter faced was Alberth Martinez, who broke the game open with a two-run triple to left center. Fernando Perez capped the seven-run uprising with a sacrifice fly to left.
San Antonio upped the lead to 8-1 in the sixth against Sean Stutzman courtesy of a Rondon single to center.
The Hooks carved a little into the lead in the seventh when they scored three runs (just one earned) off Enyel De Los Santos (3-3). The talented right-hander allowed just three hits and one walk, while striking out six over five innings of relief.
T.J. Weir worked a scoreless ninth to cap the victory. San Antonio's magic number to clinch the South Division first half title is down to just three following Midland's (33-31) split of a doubleheader with Frisco. The Missions now lead the 'Hounds by four games with just six left in the half.
San Antonio (37-27) begins an eight-game road trip Wednesday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark with the first of four against Frisco (29-35). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Chris Huffman (1-0, 1.35) will take the hill for the Missions in the opener, while the RoughRiders counter with fellow righty Collin Wiles (5-2, 3.38).
