BOX SCORE

CLEARWATER, FL - Despite rallying back from a 6-2 deficit, the Clearwater Threshers Opening Night comeback fell short in a 6-5 loss to the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels at BayCare Ballpark on Friday night.

Left-hander Rafael Marcano made his 2022 debut on the mound for Clearwater, allowing three runs on only two hits in 2.2 innings of work while walking three and striking out two.

The Mighty Mussels (1-0) opened up a 3-0 lead in the third before the Threshers (0-1) got two back in the home half on a two-run double by third baseman Kendall Simmons.

Trailing 6-2 in the sixth, outfielder Jadiel Sanchez lifted the teams first home run of the new season out to right-center to make it 6-3. Clearwater added two more in the seventh on an RBI single by Marcus Lee Sang and an RBI groundout from Yhoswar Garcia to trim the deficit to 6-5.

While the Clearwater bullpen was able to hold Fort Myers off the scoreboard the rest of the way, right-hander Matthew Swain entered for the Mighty Mussels and quieted the Threshers bats with a two-inning save to preserve the 6-5 victory.

Clearwater and Fort Myers return to BayCare Ballpark on Saturday night for game two of the series. RHP Andrew Painter, the No. 3-ranked prospect in the Philadelphia Phillies organization, is slated to start for the Threshers while RHP David Festa is set to take the mound for the Mighty Mussels. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
