Norfolk, VA --- For the second straight day, the Norfolk Tides defeated the Durham Bulls by a run, taking Saturday night's contest 5-4 at Harbor Park.
Pedro Álvarez and Mike Yastrzemski hit early home runs to send the Tides (52-61) to a 5-0 lead after two innings before the Bulls (69-43) began their comeback.
Johnny Field singled hom Willy Adames in the third, then Patrick Leonard tripled with the bases loaded in the fifth to pull Durham within 5-4, but the Bulls would get no closer.
Chase Whitley (L, 0-1), making his first appearance with the Bulls since April 10th, threw 47 pitches over just 1 2/3 innings to suffer the loss. Ryan Garton pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Jeff Ames threw two scoreless with four strikeouts, while Andrew Kittredge fanned five over his two shutout innings.
The Bulls' magic number remained at 17 thanks to Gwinnett's Saturday night win in Charlotte.
The three-game series concludes on Sunday afternoon at 4:05 PM ET with Ryan Yarbrough (11-5, 3.46) opposing Mike Wright (3-4, 3.90).
