Mud Hens Notes

Choosin’ Iowa: The Mud Hens won three games out of the five they played in Des Moines this week, taking the season series from the I-Cubs by 12 games to 10, staying over .500 as they continued to chase the second half crown. Tuesday’s game was cancelled as a result of inclement weather. The Hens opened play with a 7-3 win on Wednesday behind strong pitching and powerful hitting, carrying the same things into Thursday’s 9-1 win. They dropped Friday’s game 9-3 as Iowa’s offense woke up in the late innings, but took the 9-7 win on Saturday in an offensive showcase. Iowa took the final game of the series, a 2-1 Mud Hens defeat in a battle of pitching staffs.

Howling for You: LHP Jackson Wolf, who spent last week defending an International League Pitcher of the Week nod, has turned his season around since joining Toledo, posting a 3-1 record and 1.63 ERA in six appearances (five starts) since being acquired via trade. Since his acquisition on August 3, he holds the fourth-best ERA in all of Triple-A (min. 25 IP), allowing the second-least hits (14) and earned runs (5), and holds the second-lowest WHIP in Triple-A among all pitchers with at least 25 innings since the trade. In his last four starts, Wolf has only given up two earned runs (both to Iowa) in 19.2 innings of work, tying a career-high strikeout mark (11; 8/28 at St. Paul), and throwing a hitless six-inning performance against Indianapolis.

High-Quality File: RHP Dylan File notched his fifth quality start of the season, the team's eighth of the year. Bryan Garcia (2022) was the last Mud Hen to throw five quality starts in a season, going 4-2 with a 4.53 ERA in 11 starts that season. Carl Edwards Jr., Kenny Serwa, and Jackson Wolf were responsible for the other three. The team's eight quality starts matches last season’s total (Lael Lockhart led that season with 2) and falls five short of the team's 2024 total (13; led by Ty Madden and Bryan Sammons, each with 4). The four quality starts that Toledo had in August were the team's most in a month since July 2024 (5).

Dream Cruz: OF Trei Cruz has hits in each of his last eight games, and has reached base safely in each of his last 19 (and 32 of his last 34 games). Since the start of the hit streak on September 3, Cruz leads the Mud Hens in hits (10), doubles (4), and walks (7). Over the course of his on-base streak, dating back to August 20, Cruz is maintaining a .370 batting average with seven doubles, two home runs, 11 runs driven in, 16 runs scored, 14 walks, and three stolen bases. Cruz has taken off in the leadoff spot in the lineup, posting the International League’s sixth-highest batting average at .323 (min. 100 PA) in the top spot.

The Final Countdown: The Mud Hens come home for the final week of the season, closing out 2026 against the Louisville Bats. Toledo holds a 10-8 advantage over the season series against Louisville (including a 5-1 record at Fifth Third Field), batting .262 as a team against the division opponent. Tyler Mattison and Jack Little, two of Toledo’s most-used bullpen arms, have each thrown 6.1 innings in relief against the Bats this season without allowing a run. Trei Cruz leads the offense, batting .368 against Louisville this season.
