DAYTONA BEACH—The Daytona Tortugas rallied from a run down in both the ninth and tenth innings as a walk-off hit from Michel Triana sent Daytona past the Jupiter Hammerheads 4-3 on Sunday evening at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Daytona (28-35) ended the series the way it began: with a ten-inning walk-off, securing a series victory over Jupiter (33-30).

Daytona took the early lead in the first against Jupiter starter Eliezer Rodriguez. Hector Rodriguez lined a one-out triple into the right-field corner, his seventh of the season. He came home one batter later on a sacrifice fly by Sal Stewart to stake Daytona to a 1-0 lead.

That lead, though, quickly evaporated in the second against Daytona starter Mason Pelio. Ian Lewis blooped a single to right with one out and stole second. Chase Luttrell followed with a single to left. Lewis was initially held at third, but instead scored when the ball was mishandled for an error. The tally tied the game at one apiece.

Eliezer Rodriguez settled down to finish with 3.0 innings of one-run ball, while Pelio settled in. He allowed two leadoff singles in the third, but a double play helped blunt that rally before a 1-2-3 fourth frame.

Pelio ran into trouble again in the fifth as a single and hit batter put two on with one out. Manager Julio Morillo came out to the mound, but let Pelio stay in the game. The right-hander rewarded his faith with a pop-up and a strikeout looking to finish off 5.0 innings, in which he allowed one run on five hits, one walk, one hit batter, and three strikeouts, albeit in a no-decision.

Kenya Huggins entered the game to begin the sixth and worked around leadoff baserunners in each of his first two innings. In the seventh, he retired the leadoff man, but allowed a double to Jorge Caballero. Zach Maxwell then entered the game, but Lewis greeted him by slicing a double down the left field line to break the stalemate, as Caballero scored to put the Hammerheads ahead 2-1.

Daytona tried to rally against Jupiter’s Dale Stanavich in the eighth as Rodriguez singled with one out, but a strike-em-out, throw-em-out double play abruptly ended the inning.

In the ninth, Evan Taylor entered and was immediately greeted by a pinch-hit single from Johnny Ascanio. Ascanio then stole second with one out before Victor Acosta was plunked. Ariel Almonte followed with a single up the middle. Acosta was thrown out trying to reach third, but Ascanio crossed the plate with the tying run, sending the game to extra innings.

In the tenth against Joseph Menefee, Jupiter moved the automatic runner Caballero to third on a bunt. Chase Luttrell followed with a ground ball to short, but Caballero was ruled safe on a close play at the plate, putting Jupiter in front, 3-2. Menefee (5-1), though got the final two outs to set the stage for the rally.

Taylor returned and walked Logan Tanner to open the tenth before Carlos Jorge rolled a dribbler that went for an infield hit to load the bases with no outs. Rodriguez struck out, but Stewart followed with a high chopper to second where the only play was first base, tying the game. Triana, in his first at-bat of the game after entering for defense, ripped Taylor’s second pitch into deep left-center to bring home Tanner for the game-winning run, sealing the series with a 4-3 victory.

The Tortugas will have Monday off before continuing the homestand on Tuesday night with the series opener against the Palm Beach Cardinals. It will be another Silver Sluggers Tuesday and Breast Cancer Awareness Night at The Jack. Gates will open at 5:30 with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Pregame coverage on the Tortugas Radio Network with the Voice of the Tortugas Brennan Mense begins at 6:20 from Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
