DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Behind six shutout innings from RHP Michael Byrne , the Daytona Tortugas bested the Embry-Riddle Eagles, 5-0, in a seven-inning exhibition contest on Tuesday evening in front of 1,785 fans at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Byrne (6.0 IP, 4 H, 3 SO) - who never started in 19 relief appearances for the Tortugas last year and just three times in his college career at Florida - kept hitters off balance throughout the contest. The right-hander allowed multiple runners on base just once in his six frames and retired the last six batters he faced.
The Tortugas scored consistently, pushing a run across in five of their six turns at-bat.
After DH Randy Ventura (1-4, R, 2B) doubled to start the first, 3B Jonathan India (1-1, R, RBI) drove in the game's opening tally with a sacrifice fly to center. In the second, RF Andy Sugilio (1-2, R) walked, moved to third on a pair of wild pitches, then came across on a ground out by C Hendrik Clementina (0-2, RBI). India reached on a single in the third and later scored thanks to an infield single by Sugilio and a throwing error.
Up 3-0 after three, LF Miles Gordon (1-1, 2 R, 3B) tripled down the right-field line to jumpstart the fourth before crossing the dish on a CF Lorenzo Cedrola (1-2, RBI) groundout. Daytona capped off their scoring in the sixth courtesy of a run-tallying fielder's choice with the bases loaded by 2B Yonathan Mendoza (0-2, RBI).
RHP Aneurys Zabala (1.0 IP, BB) came on for the top of the seventh and compiled three ground balls to end the contest.
The Tortugas will begin their 2019 regular-season campaign at home on Thursday, April 4, with a brief two-game set against the Florida Fire Frogs, the High-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves.
