Modesto, CA - Rehabbing Dodgers' third baseman Justin Turner had a hit and an RBI while Yadier Álvarez turned in one of his strongest outings in a Rancho Cucamonga uniform, as the Quakes topped the Modesto Nuts on Monday evening, holding on by a final of 7-5 at LoanMart Field.
Alvarez (1-2) netted the first win of his career at the High-A level, allowing just a solo home run over five innings of one-hit baseball. He struck out five and walked one while hurling 71 total pitches.
A four-run eighth by the Nuts nearly erased the win for Alvarez. After Logan Taylor's three-run double made it a 6-5 game, Eric Filia singled to center. But DJ Peters came up throwing, firing a one-hop strike to catcher Will Smith, who applied the tag on Taylor to end the threat and keep the Quakes in front.
Rancho got some insurance in the bottom of the eighth to make it 7-5, as Luke Raley scored on a one-out throwing error by Taylor at third base, on a would-be double-play ball.
Trailing 1-0 in the third, the Quakes finally jumped on Modesto starter Reggie McClain (7-3) for a four-spot to take the lead for good. Yusniel Díaz tied the game with a two-out RBI single, before Peters gave the Quakes a 2-1 advantage with an RBI single. Two batters later, after a walk to Will Smith loaded the bases, Omar Estevez delivered a two-run single to make it 4-1.
Rancho added another run in the fourth, as Turner ripped a two-out RBI single, making it 5-1. Turner played five innings at third base and finished 1-for-3, saying after the game that his right hamstring felt good.
Isabel launched his league-leading 14th homer of the year in the sixth, a solo-shot to give the Quakes a 6-1 lead.
The Nuts got four in the eighth off of Ryan Moseley, but couldn't get to Parker Curry in the ninth. Curry, who allowed a leadoff single to former Quake Joey Curletta to open the inning, retired the next three hitters to finish it off and record his third save of the year.
Despite the win, Rancho (30-28) remains a full game back of Lancaster, who defeated San Jose on Monday night.
On Tuesday, the Quakes will send newcomer Devin Smeltzer (0-0) to the mound in his debut for Rancho Cucamonga. The lefty will be opposed by Modesto's Nathan Bannister (2-3), with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.
Tuesday will be another Healthy RC Recycle Tuesday, as fans can bring ten CRV-eligible bottles and cans to the ballpark for a FREE Club Seat Ticket. Tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. Go Quakes!
