(Richmond, VA) - In their most lopsided victory of the season, everything went right for the R-Phils at The Diamond in Wednesday night's 9-1 win. For the second time, David Parkinson won while pitching in his backyard, improving to 4-0 on the road and becoming the first starter to earn four wins. And the lineup was relentless, totaling 12 hits and eight walks while finishing an incredible 7-for-19 with runners in scoring position. Luke Williams , Mickey Moniak , and Adam Haseley combined on 6 hits while chipping in with two RBIs each, and Cornelius Randolph came up big with his first three-hit game.
Flying Squirrels starter Garrett Williams walked Williams and Moniak to start the night, and Haseley got things going with a single for a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Austin Listi made it 2-0 with a base hit back up the middle, which was more than enough for Parkinson. Williams got the first two outs in the second, but Luke Williams got on with a double and Moniak singled him home for a 3-0 lead. Haseley's infield single was thrown away by catcher Hamlet Marte for an error that scored the fourth run, and Darick Hall's league-leading eighth hit by pitch spelled the end of the night for Williams (1-4) in just an inning-and-two-thirds.
Parkinson was locked in from the get-go, getting a pickoff of Jacob Heyward after a walk in the first inning which helped him retire the side on just 11 pitches. He followed that by striking out three in the second despite a one-out single from Jonah Arenado , who would drive in the Squirrels lone run with a fielder's choice groundout in the sixth. Parkinson (4-2) added two more strikeouts in the third, one each in the fourth and fifth, and ended his night after six by freezing Gio Brusa for his ninth punchout.
Reading put it away for good in the top of the eighth after their fifth run scored in the top of the third thanks to a leadoff single from Randolph and a sacrifice fly from Williams. With one out, Richmond reliever Kieran Lovegrove walked three straight to load the bases, and Williams dunked his second hit into right for another RBI and a 6-1 lead. Moniak brought in his second run with a bases-loaded walk, and after a wild pitch made it 8-1, Haseley singled in another run for a 9-1 lead.
Randolph led off the ninth with his second double to complete the three-hit effort, and Jose Gomez reached for the second time with a single after entering in a double-switch. With 12 hits secured, the bullpen work of Aaron Brown , Connor Brogdon , and newcomer Jonathan Hennigan was nearly flawless for an inning at a clip. Brogdon struck out the side in the eighth, and the lefty Hennigan ended his Double-A debut with a strikeout of Marte to tie the series up at a game apiece.
