CORPUS CHRISTI - Framber Valdez struck out a career-best 12 batters Monday night, leading the Hooks to a 3-0 victory over the Missions in the series opener at Whataburger Field.
Corpus Christi (23-15, 66-41) notched its eighth shutout victory of the season. The Hooks have now won three in a row.
Valdez permitted just two baserunners, both via two-out singles, over a season-high 7 2/3 innings. The 24-year-old lefty threw 64 of 98 pitches for strikes.

Justin Ferrell retired all four batters he faced to pick up his second save. Ferrell struck out two.
Corpus Christi rolled a pair in the first against lefty Logan Allen. Stephen Wrenn worked a walk and went first-to-third on a base hit by Randy César. Josh Rojas was next and lined a single into right field, scoring Wrenn.
With men at the corners, Allen had appeared to pick off Rojas and first, but during the rundown, Cesar scored from first. Rojas wound up safe at first on the play.
Following the first, Allen faced the minimum until his exit after the sixth.
The Hooks added an insurance run in the eighth. Eduardo de Oleo cracked an infield single off Miguel Diaz to begin the inning. De Oelo went to second on Anibal Sierra's single, and then scored on Cesar's two-out knock to right field.
The Hooks send Corbin Martin (6-1, 2.65) to the mound Tuesday night. Chris Paddack (3-1, 1.19) is slated to take the ball for the Missions (21-16, 63-44). First pitch 7:05.
