BURLINGTON, VT --- Jack Meggs and Jordan Devencenzi had back-to-back two-out doubles in bottom of 1st inning to plate the game's only run, while reliever Ivan Andueza tossed four scoreless innings as the Vermont Lake Monsters beat the Staten Island Yankees 1-0 in a rain shortened New York-Penn League game

BURLINGTON, VT --- Jack Meggs and Jordan Devencenzi had back-to-back two-out doubles in bottom of 1st inning to plate the game's only run, while reliever Ivan Andueza tossed four scoreless innings as the Vermont Lake Monsters beat the Staten Island Yankees 1-0 in a rain shortened New York-Penn League game Friday night at historic Centennial Field.

The seven-inning game, the first of a scheduled doubleheader, was stopped by rain in the top of the seventh after the Yankees had gotten back-to-back singles to open the inning. The game was later officially called due to rain and wet grounds, giving Vermont the victory. Because of the unplayable conditions, the second game was postponed and will be made up as part of a doubleheader when the Lake Monsters visit Staten Island July 11-13.
Vermont starter Parker Dunshee, a seventh-round selection out of Wake Forest, worked around a leadoff single in first and two baserunners (hit batter/walk) to toss two scoreless innings in his Lake Monsters debut. Andueza came on in relief to start the third inning and retired the first nine batters he faced before issuing a leadoff walk in the sixth. Andueza (2-0), who had retired the first 15 batters he faced in a victory that Friday, has not allowed an earned run over his first 9 2/3 innings pitched this season.
The Lake Monsters got the game's only run in the first as Meggs lined a double to right with two outs and Devencenzi followed with an RBI double off the glove of Yankee right fielder Cesar Diaz. Staten Island starter Juan De Paula (0-2) allowed three hits with one walk and four strikeouts over five innings to take the loss, while Branden Pinder (who pitched for the New York Yankees in 2015 and 2016) had a walk and two strikeouts in one inning on a rehab assignment.
Vermont continues the homestand with a two-game series at Centennial against the Lowell Spinners Saturday at 6:05 pm and Sunday at 5:05 pm. The first 1,000 fans to the game on Saturday will receive a Lake Monsters Patriotic Performance T-Shirt.
