Vicuña and Young homer in 13-6 loss

MIDLAND, Mich. - Kevin Vicuña homered in the first inning and Chavez Young homered in the ninth inning, but the Lansing Lugnuts (8-2, 51-29) fell to the Great Lakes Loons (1-9, 25-53), 13-6, on Saturday night at Dow Diamond.The result ended the Loons' franchise record 13-game losing streak.

MIDLAND, Mich. - Kevin Vicuña homered in the first inning and Chavez Young homered in the ninth inning, but the Lansing Lugnuts (8-2, 51-29) fell to the Great Lakes Loons (1-9, 25-53), 13-6, on Saturday night at Dow Diamond.

The result ended the Loons' franchise record 13-game losing streak.

The Lugnuts piled up 12 hits in the losing cause, with Ryan Gold and Freddy Rodriguez notching three hits apiece and Brandon Grudzielanek drawing three walks. Vicuña added a 2-for-5 night with his second career home run, and Young supplied an opposite-field shot in his final at-bat for his fourth home run of the season.

Carlos Rincon and Brock Carpenter each homered for the Loons, who scored two runs in the first inning and three more in the second inning, ending the night early for starter Colton Laws (Loss, 4-4).

Reliever Emerson Jimenez pitched the next 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run in the third and three of four runs in a Loons fifth-inning uprising. Andrew Deramo gave the Lugnuts three innings of relief, tagged for four runs, two earned, while striking out four. Claudio Custodio pitched a perfect eighth, recording a strikeout.

Great Lakes starter Edwin Uceta (Win, 2-5) ended a drought longer than his ballclub, earning his first victory since April 28th with five innings of seven-hit, two-run, two-walk, five-strikeout ball.


The Nuts go for the series victory on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m., starting left-hander Matt Gunter  (4.62 ERA) against Loons right-hander Alfredo Tavarez (3.28).
