WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY- In a tremendous pitching duel between each teams' staffs, the Hudson Valley Renegades won on a walk-off, 1-0 in 10 innings Sunday night over the Staten Island Yankees at Dutchess Stadium.
The Renegades had several chances to score throughout the ballgame. In the second, catcher Zac Law led off with an infield single to short, then went to second on a throwing error by Staten Island shortstop Danienger Perez. He went to third on a groundout, but was then thrown out at home as the next hitter, rightfielder Angel Perez, grounded into a fielder's choice to short.
In the sixth, second baseman Vidal Brujan drew a one-out walk, then moved to second on a passed ball. Following a groundout, Brujan stole third but was left stranded shortstop Taylor Walls grounded to first to end the inning.
In the eighth, centerfielder Carl Chester drew a two-out walk and went to second on a passed ball. However, Walls struck out to strand Chester at second and keep the game scoreless.
Hudson Valley finally broke through in the 10th. Staten Island reliever Eduardo Rivera had struck out five Renegades in his first two innings of work. However, he allowed a leadoff double to leftfielder Isaac Benard, then gave up a four-pitch walk to third baseman Bill Pujols to put runners at first and second with no one out. Rivera was lifted for fellow reliever Greg Weissert who promptly hit first baseman Matt Eureste on a bunt attempt to load the bases. That's when Brujan delivered the game-winning RBI single over the head of Yankees rightfielder Timmy Robinson to give the Renegaes the 1-0 win.
There were only seven hits in the game; five by Hudson Valley. Nobody had more than one hit for the Renegades, and the only extra-base hit was the 10th inning double by Benard. The Yankees had two singles and five baserunners for the evening. Only two of those runners reached second. One was doubled up on a line drive double play in the fourth, and the other runner was stranded as a strikeout ended the fifth.
The win went to Renegades reliever Eduard Rosillo (1-2) who fired two hitless innings and struck out one. Rivera (1-2) took the loss for Staten Island after allowing the earned run on a hit in two innings. He walked three and struck out five.
Lost in the win was a fine pitching performance for Renegade Johnleider Salinas who came on in the third inning and proceeded to throw five innings of scoreless baseball. He allowed only one hit, struck out five and walked another.
The professional pitching debut of Renegades starter Brendan McKay was a smash hit as the southpaw struck out four in two hitless innings, including the last four men he faced. He allowed one baserunner on a walk.
The Renegades continues their series with the Yankees tomorrow as they head to Staten Island for game two of their three-game commuter series. First-pitch is scheduled for 7:00. Renegades right-hander Mikey York (3-1, 1.09 ERA) will face Yankees righty Daniel Alvarez (1-2, 3.06 ERA) of the Yankees.
