KINSTON, NC - On Monday afternoon Minor League Baseball announced its Pitchers of the Week and Down East's Wes Benjamin was recognized for the Carolina League. The left-hander worked 7.2 shutout innings on Tuesday vs. Carolina - marking a career-long for shutout innings.
Benjamin, 24, carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning in his start on August 15th against Carolina. He struck out seven batters without a walk in his performance. He also threw a season-high 104 pitches with 74 for strikes (71%).
The Woodies won the game 1-0 after he was pulled on a walk-off sacrifice fly by Luis La O. For Benjmain, it was his third quality start in his last four tries. Down East has also won nine straight games he has started.
A St.Charles, IL native, it is the first such honor in Benjamin's career. For the Wood Ducks, he is the third pitcher to earn the weekly honor. Pedro Payano and Jeffrey Springs went back-to-back in May as the first two to be recognized.
