Clinton, IA (April 21, 2018) - A come from behind effort by the Clinton LumberKings stretched their season long winning streak to five games as they dropped the Beloit Snappers 5-4 on Saturday night at Ashford University Field. Ryan Costello led the way for Clinton with a 3-for-4 night at the plate that included a run, a double, a home run, and three RBI.
The LumberKings (9-3) scored the game's first run in the bottom of the third inning. Eugene Helder opened the inning with a triple off the wall in right, Clinton's first three bagger of the season. Two batters later, Helder scored when Billy Cooke lifted a sacrifice fly to center.
Beloit (5-5) then tied the game in the top of the fourth on a Logan Farrar solo home run to right. The long fly was Farrar's first home run of the season and just the second as a team for the Snappers.
In the top of the fifth inning, Beloit took their only lead of the night. LumberKings starter Tommy Romero walked the leadoff hitter and was replaced by Adonis De La Cruz. Trace Loehr did not allow De La Cruz to settle in as he tagged his first pitch for a two-run home run to right. Beloit added an Austin Beck RBI single that put the Snappers in front 4-1.
Clinton began to battle back in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases against Beloit starter Bryce Conley, forcing him from the game. Joshua Reagan then came on in relief for Beloit and navigated the jam without allowing a run.
The LumberKings then got to Reagan (0-1) for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score at four. Back-to-back leadoff walks to Ariel Sandoval and Jack Larsen set the table for Ryan Costello's game tying three-run home run. The home run marked the second straight night that Costello has gone deep.
Reagan remained in the game for Beloit to work the seventh inning where he allowed, what proved to be, the game's deciding run. Louis Boyd was hit by a pitch to open the frame and moved to third on a wild pitch and flyout combination that brought up Johnny Adams. On the sixth pitch of the bat to Adams, Reagan missed with a wild pitch for ball four that scored Boyd form third.
The 5-4 lead was protected by Collin Kober (1-0) who earned the win for two shutout innings of relief work. Sam Delaplane picked up his second save of the season with a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning.
The LumberKings will conclude their homestand with the third and final game of a three-game set with the Beloit Snappers on Sunday afternoon. Clinton will give the ball to left-hander Ray Kerr (0-1, 21.00) while the Snappers will tap righty Wyatt Marks (2-0, 1.80). First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM. Fans looking to listen to the call can hear Erik Oas at 1:45 PM with the pregame show on 100.3 FM WCCI.
Sunday's are Family Funday's at Ashford University Field presented by the Children's Discovery Center. Kids can enjoy balloon artists, face painting, and postgame kids run the bases.
