Wings top Mud Hens 7-1

The Rochester Red Wings topped the Toledo Mud Hens 7-1 Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field. The paid attendance of 9,116 pushed the Wings over the 30,000 mark for the three-day weekend, the second time this season fans have helped reach that mark. The win gave the Wings seven victories in the eight-game homestand; the Red Wings will return home on August 1 to host Lehigh Valley (Phillies).

The Red Wings took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning when Mitch Garver hit a solo home run off Toledo starter Daniel Norris for his team-leading 14th of the season. Rochester added a run in the inning after Matt Hague scored from third on a wild pitch, extending the Red Wings lead to 2-0.
Norris left the game with two outs in the first inning with an apparent injury. He finished with 0.2 innings pitched, allowing two earned runs on two hits, two walks and one strikeout. He threw 32 pitches - 17 for strikes.
Garver added another RBI in the bottom of the second inning when he doubled in Niko Goodrum, making it a 3-0 ballgame. After a Hague RBI single and a two-run home run by Kennys Vargas later in the inning, his fifth of the season, Rochester's lead was stretched to 6-0.
Rochester starter Aaron Slegers looked impressive to begin the game, allowing no hits and striking out five through the first three innings.
Toledo recorded their first run of the game, which cut Rochester's lead to 6-1, on an RBI single by JaCoby Jones in the top of the sixth inning.
After a hit and two walks loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning, Engelb Vielma hit an RBI groundout that scored Daniel Palka, who returned Sunday after missing the last 56 games with a fractured left index finger. The run made it a six-run ball game again and gave the Red Wings a 7-1 advantage.
Slegers was replaced by Drew Rucinski to begin the top of the eighth inning after pitching 7.0 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits, one walk and seven strikeouts. He threw 103 pitches - 72 for strikes.
Rucinski allowed a hit and struck out two in his relief inning, and Jake Reed pitched the ninth for the Wings. Reed found himself in a bases loaded situation with two out in the ninth inning, but a game-ending strikeout secured the win.

THIS DAY IN RED WINGS HISTORY
1980 - With the Rochester Red Wings trailing first-place Columbus by 8 full games entering July 23rd's game against the Clippers, the Wings faced a difficult path towards winning the division. After earning the split in a doubleheader the previous day, Rochester needed a win in the worst way. What the Wings got was a bullpen collapse, as Rochester was unable to maintain their 5-1 lead. When the dust had settled, the Clippers bats scored eight runs over the final three innings, as the Wings dropped a heartbreaker to Columbus 9-6. Through the games first six innings, Rochester lead 5-1, thanks in part to player-coach Mike Eden's solo home run. On the day, the Wings clubbed three home runs, including solo homers by Dallas Williams and Dan Gonzales, but it wasn't enough in the end. Rochester received excellent starting pitching from Jeff Rineer, who surrendered three runs through six and 2/3 innings, including five strikeouts, and left in position to collect his fifth victory, but it would have to wait for another day. With the loss, Rochester fell to 52-49, a full nine games behind the Clippers, who were managed by former Wings skipper Joe Altobelli. The 1980 season would be Joe's first, and only, managerial stint with Columbus, but that fact was of little consolation to Wings fans.
1990 - Pitcher Dan Boone hurled the 20th no-hitter in Red Wing history in the second game of a double header sweep of Syracuse. Leo Gomez's error was the only thing separating Boone from a perfect game. Boone was the first Red Wing to pitch a no-hitter since Gary Robson in 1974.
2005 - The Durham Bulls ran away with the game Saturday Night at Frontier Field, defeating the Rochester Red Wings 11-4. The Wings offense was inconsistent, but catcher Chris Heintz did manage to stay hot, picking up a pair of hits in the game.
THIS DAY IN INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE HISTORY
1956 - The first International League All-Star Game is held in Toronto in front of over 15,000 fans. A team of the IL's best drops the exhibition to the Major League's Milwaukee Braves 3-0. The IL musters just one hit, a 4th inning single by Montreal's Clyde Parris. The format of the IL All-Stars versus a Major League team would remain in place for 23 more years, with the exception of 1967 when the League's stars where split into a team from each division. After losing the first three contests, the IL roared back and won six of the next seven and finished with a 14-8 record in the games held from 1956-1978. The IL All-Stars lost to Cleveland 8-6 when the series was resumed in 1983. A year later a squad of players from the other seven teams defeated Rochester 4-1 in the final IL All-Star Game. Four years later the new Triple-A All-Star Game was created.

1956 - Joe Cronin and Hank Greenberg are officially inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, New York.
1974 - The National League triumphs 7-2 in the All-Star Game at Pittsburgh. Write-in choice first baseman Steve Garvey of the Dodgers is the game's MVP.
1978 - The Yankees win their fifth straight, 3-1, over the White Sox. At the Chicago airport, Billy Martin, reacting to reporters' questions about Reggie Jackson and George Steinbrenner, replies, "The two deserve each other. One's a born liar; the other's convicted."
