Wings trample Bisons 7-0

The Rochester Red Wings pounded out a season-high 17 hits in a 7-0 win over the Buffalo Bisons Monday night at Frontier Field. The win evened the Wings' record at 33-33, and moved them ahead of the Bisons into fourth place in the division. The teams meet again Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m., with Dodgers great and former National League MVP Steve Garvey signing autographs before the game.

Matt Hague got the action started early as in the bottom of the first inning when he singled off Buffalo pitcher Brett Oberholzer, which extended his hit streak to eight games. Mitch Garver followed Hague with a double that set the Red Wings up with runners on second and third with only one out. Rochester couldn't capitalize on the early opportunity Oberholzer pitched his way out of the inning without allowing a run.
In the top of the second inning, back to back singles by John Ryan Murphy and J.B. Shuck gave Rochester yet another scoring chance. Two batters later Zack Granite delivered an RBI single that scored Murphy, and also extended his on-base streak to 19 straight games. Hague followed Granite with an RBI single that gave the Red Wings a 2-0 lead.
Niko Goodrum led off the third inning with a walk and he was quickly brought home on a RBI single by ByungHo Park that extended the Rochester lead to 3-0. Park scored on a single by Tommy Field that added another run to the Wings total. One batter later Murphy doubled in Field making it 5-0. A sacrifice fly by Engelb Vielma brought home Murphy, and that pushed the Red Wings lead to 6-0.
Oberholzer's night came to an end in the bottom of the third. He finished with 2.1 innings pitched, allowing 11 hits, six runs, all earned, walking one while striking out three. He threw 73 pitches, 41 of which were strikes.
In the bottom of the fourth, back to back singles by Park and Field set up Murphy's RBI double, for a 7-0 score.
David Hurlbut was in command the of the game the entire night. He pitched seven shutout innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out seven on 98 pitches, 65 of which were strikes.
Mason Melotakis, took over to start the top of the eighth inning, making his Triple-A debut for Rochester. Melotakis set down all three batters he faced, striking out one. Kam Mickolio worked the ninth inning, setting down the side.

THIS DAY IN RED WINGS HISTORY
2005 - Corky Miller's suicide squeeze bunt scored Terry Tiffee with the winning run, and Red Wings beat Toledo 5-4 in 11 innings Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field. Miller also hit a two-run home run for the Wings. Tiffee stroked a 3-1 pitch from Matt Roney to left field for a double to lead off the 11th, and moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt by Josh Rabe. Roney (1-1) walked Todd Dunwoody intentionally to bring up Miller; with a 1-0 count, Tiffee raced for home and Miller dropped down a bunt in front of the plate that Roney could not make a play on. With Sunday's crowd of 10,158, the Wings drew a combined three day attendance figure of over 30,000 for just the third time in eight years.
THIS DAY IN INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE HISTORY
1985 - MacArthur Stadium in Syracuse plays host to the longest game in Chiefs history. The marathon with Pawtucket lasts for 27 innings, with a total time of 7 hours and 7 minutes. Syracuse dents the plate once in the bottom of the 3rd, but the PawSox answer in the 7th. The game continues long into the night tied at 1-1, with both teams squandering countless chances to win it. Finally with two outs in the top of the 27th frame, center fielder Ed Jurak delivers a bases loaded single to put Pawtucket ahead 3-1. Jim Dorsey, who came on in the 24th, closes the door on the Chiefs to end the game. Syracuse manager Doug Ault knows his team had every chance to win the game - the Chiefs had collected 22 hits over the 27 innings, but stranded 28 runners and scored just the one run all night.
