CLINTON, IA (June 29, 2019) - Christopher Torres and Peyton Burdick homered and the Clinton LumberKings stretched their season long winning streak to six games on a 7-2 triumph over the Quad Cities River Bandits on Saturday night at NelsonCorp Field. Torres led the way for Clinton (6-3, 39-39) with three runs scored, a 1-for-3 night, and two RBIs in addition to two walks.
Torres home run started the scoring for Clinton and came as the first batter faced by River Bandits (5-3, 48-26) starter R.J. Freure. The blast went into the Lumber Lounge in right for his third of the year.
Two innings later, they added their second run of the game with a Peyton Burdick home run that went for his first as a LumberKing.
Freure (4-3) was given the loss for his time out. He turned in five innings allowing three runs on five hits while walking four and striking out seven.
Quad Cities kept things close early on against Clinton starter Tyler Mitzel. After falling behind 2-0 they tallied a run in the fourth on an Oscar Campos RBI single, and then briefly tied the game in the top of the fifth. Austin Dennis singled home what proved to be the final River Bandits run to tie that game at two.
Mitzel (5-3) earned the win for his first start of the season. Over five innings of work he allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits while walking one and striking out six.
In the bottom of the fifth, Clinton took the lead for good on a Will Banfield sacrifice fly to center. All nine of the LumberKings batters either collected a hit, reached base, or drove in a run during the game.
An inning later, in the bottom of the sixth, Clinton put the game out of reach with a four-run rally. Eight batters came up to the plate and allow the LumberKings to cruise to a 7-2 win.
Tyler Jones worked the final four innings for Clinton and was awarded the save for his time - his first of the year. He allowed no runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out four.
