KINSTON, NC - For the third time in July, the Wood Ducks (15-18, 39-63) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one and never relinquished it in a 6-2 victory over the Nationals (11-20, 43-57). Chuck Moorman led the way for the offense with three hits and two runs batted in as the Woodies mashed out 15 hits.

Wes Benjamin started on his 24th birthday and kept the Potomac bats at bay with only three hits allowed over six innings of work. It marks the sixth straight win for the Wood Ducks in games started by Benjamin. He also ties the team lead for wins on the season with his seventh - matching Richelson Peña.
The five-run first inning was fueled by six consecutive hits from hitters three through eight in the order. In all, Down East collected seven hits in the inning with the only extra-base hit from Yanio Perez - an RBI double. Other RBIs in the inning came from Preston Scott, Josh Altmann, Evan Van Hoosier, and Moorman.
Also in the first inning, Carlos Garay extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single to right that started the stretch of offense.
Moorman's second RBI came in the fifth when he plated Altmann from second with a single to right field. He would add a double to lead off the eighth for his fifth three-hit night.
After Benjamin departed, Jeffrey Springs made his first appearance of the year from the bullpen with a scoreless seventh. Scott Williams would follow for the final two innings and retire all six batters he faced with four strikeouts in a row to open his outing. He has not allowed a run for 12 consecutive games (14.1 IP).
With the win, the Woodies salvage the finale of the series with the Nationals. Down East finishes 4-9 on the year with Potomac.
The homestand continues on Thursday opening a four-game series with the Buies Creek Astros. $1 Beer Night presented by PBR is set for 7:00 p.m. with the gates opening at 6:00 p.m. You can listen to every pitch of the 2017 season live on Sports/Talk 960 The Bull or streamed on the TuneIn Radio app.
