WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY-A costly error and strikeouts galore did the Renegades in as they lost 3-2 to the Staten Island Yankees on Wednesday night at Dutchess Stadium in the team's home opener.
Staten Island got on the board first with a run in the second as a single by rightfielder Leonardo Molina and a double by first baseman Dalton Blaser put runners at second and third with no one out. Renegades starting pitcher Jhonleider Salinas then uncorked a wild pitch, which scored Molina from third and gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead. However, with runners at second and third with no one out, Salinas struck out the next three hitters to keep the deficit at one run.
Hudson Valley tied the game in the third as second baseman Vidal Brujan launched his first homerun of the season down the rightfield line to even the score. The Renegades then took the lead in the fourth as third baseman Matt Eureste reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, then went to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a sacrifice fly to center by rightfielder Angel Perez.
The Yankees would retake the lead, however, in the seventh as sloppy fielding did the Renegades in. With one out, catcher Jason Lopez singled and leftfielder Kendall Coleman walked to put runners at first and second. A wild pitch moved Lopez to third. He then scored when Brujan mishandled a throw from Eureste on a fielder's choice attempt at second. The ball went into rightfield and allowed Coleman to move from first to third. The next hitter, third baseman Daniel Barrios, then drove Coleman home on a single to left and the Yankees took a 3-2 lead.
From there it was all about the pitching as the staffs combined to strike out 24 men on the night, including 14 by Staten Island pitchers. Reliever Alex Bisacca (1-0) picked up the win for Staten Island after striking out two in 1.2 innings. Reliever Nick Padilla (0-1) took the loss for the Renegades. He gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits in his lone inning of work. Staten Island set-up man Chase Hodson struck out six of the seven men he faced in two frames, and closer Brian Trieglaff (1) garnered the save after pitching a 1-2-3 ninth for the Yankees.
Hudson Valley continues their series against the Staten Island Yankees tomorrow at 7:05. Right-hander Mikey York will pitch for the Renegades against Yankees righty Juan De Paula. Tickets can be purchased online at hvrenegades.com or by calling the ticket office at 845-838-0094.
