A familiar face is returning to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos pitching staff.
Zach Weiss, who recorded 34 saves during his previous Blue Wahoos career as a member of the Cincinnati Reds organization, joined the Pensacola Blue Wahoos roster on Tuesday. He signed with the Minnesota Twins as a free agent prior to the 2019 season.
Weiss, 26, has spent six seasons in the minor leagues after being a 6th round selection in 2013 by Cincinnati. His career has included stops in Pensacola during the 2015 season as well as 2017 and 2018. He had 25 saves in 2015, the first year the Blue Wahoos reached the post-season playoffs in franchise history.
Weiss made his Major League debut with the Reds on April 12, 2018, becoming the 57th former Pensacola player to appear in the bigs.
The righthander from Irvine, California is being counted upon to help bolster a Blue Wahoos bullpen that has been utilized frequently over the past two weeks.
In addition to Weiss, the Blue Wahoos made three other roster moves on Tuesday.
OF Ernie De La Trinidad was transferred from the Pensacola roster to High-A Fort Myers. In 40 games with the Wahoos this season, De La Trinidad hit .205 with 2 home runs and 12 runs batted in.
In place of De La Trinidad, the Blue Wahoos added a pair of potential sluggers, picking up 1B Ryan Costello from Fort Myers and IF Michael Davis from A-Cedar Rapids.
Costello was acquired from the Seattle Mariners organization at the 2018 trade deadline in return for LHP Zach Duke. The 22-year-old infielder powered 20 home runs and drove in 79 runs during the 2018 season between A-Clinton (Seattle) and Fort Myers. He's hit 5 home runs this season with the Miracle with a slash line of .189/.299/.341.
Davis was taken by the Twins in the 24th round of the 2018 draft from Texas Tech and made an immediate impression in their minor league system, hitting 10 home runs in just 45 games between R-Elizabethton and Cedar Rapids while slashing .306/.343/.567 in 2018. He's spent the entirety of 2019 with the Kernels in Cedar Rapids, posting a .266/.368/.391 line while appearing defensively at shortstop, first base, and third base.
