Modesto, CA. - Early offensive strikes held up as the Modesto Nuts defeated the San Jose Giants 4-3 on Saturday night at John Thurman Field.
Bryan Bonnell earned the spot start for the Nuts (63-56; 24-25) and worked through a bases loaded jam in the first inning before retiring eleven in a row during his four-inning shutout.
The Nuts jumped on the board right away in the bottom of the first when Jordan Cowan whacked a double against Giants (54-65; 24-25) starter Conner Menez (L, 6-6). Cowan scored on Kyle Lewis' RBI groundout. The Nuts got to Menez again in the fourth inning. After a pair of doubles and a fielder's choice, Donnie Walton smacked a two-run triple before scoring on Luis Liberato's RBI single.
Marvin Gorgas (W, 4-1) followed and worked 2 2/3 innings while allowing just one earned run with three strikeouts and two walks.
Matt Festa (S, 4/6) worked the ninth and allowed a two-out RBI single before stranding the potential tying run in scoring position.
