Quiet Bats Lead to 3-1 Loss

April 12, 2014

Quakes' starter Tom Windle shut down the Nuts' offense on Friday night at John Thurman Field in the 3-1 loss in front of 4,389 fans, the second straight sellout crowd.

One unearned run was all that the Nuts' (1-8) could muster on Friday evening. Quakes (4-5) second baseman Brandon Dixon let a Chris O'Dowd grounder sneak by him in the second inning to score David Kandlias. That was the only run allowed by Tom Windle (W, 1-0) who worked six innings, struck out four and walked none in the start for the Quakes.

Jayson Aquino (L, 0-2) got off on the wrong foot in his second start for the Nuts. The southpaw allowed the first four base runners to each in the first inning. Corey Seager put the Quakes on the board first with a RBI triple. Steven Proscia followed that with a RBI single of his own. Those two runs in the first inning were all that the Quakes could push across against Aquino. The lefty retired seven in a row at one point and struck out a season-high eight batters over six innings while walking one.

In the fifth and sixth innings, the Nuts put the tying run at second but could not push him across as they went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Owen Jones (S, 1) came in with the bases clear and one out in the ninth and retired the only two batters he faced to end the game.

On Saturday night the Nuts and Quakes square off at 7:05 p.m. in the third game of a four-game series. Righty Matt Flemer (0-1, 36.00) will toss for the Nuts. The Quakes will send right-hander Fabio Martinez (0-0, 0.00) to the mound. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 7:00 p.m. To listen on your iPhone or iPad listen live here.
