PAPILLION, NEB. – After falling behind early, the Omaha Storm Chasers erupted for 14 runs on 13 hits in the series opener with the St. Paul Saints, taking the Tuesday night contest 14-4.
Four of the first five St. Paul hitters reached, as starter Max Castillo surrendered back-to-back home runs and issued a pair of walks with one out. Castillo quickly found a groove and struck out his last two of the first inning and proceeded to retire his next eight.
Down by two early, the Storm Chasers didn’t stay behind for long and jumped ahead for good with a five-run second inning. Nick Loftin and Devin Mann drew back-to-back walks, then Nate Eaton doubled in Loftin to bring Omaha within one. Logan Porter then reached on an error that scored both Mann and Eaton to give the Chasers a lead and Bubba Thompson connected on a two-run homer, his first long ball with Omaha to cap a five-run inning.
Omaha added two more runs of support for Castillo the third on a two-run double from Mann that scored Nick Pratto and Loftin.
Castillo’s stretch of eight straight batters retired came to an end in the fourth, as three of the first four Saints batters singled to produce two runs, at the time bringing St. Paul within three runs.
The Storm Chasers followed up with seven unanswered runs, scoring at least one in each of the final four innings of the game. Clay Dungan singled in two in the fifth and one in the eighth, while Loftin singled in one in the sixth. Thompson singled in runs in the seventh and eighth, while Edward Olivares brought home a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly.
All nine Storm Chasers hitters in the starting lineup record hits, with Thompson and Dungan each producing three-hit games. Thompson drove in four runs, while Dungan had three RBI and Mann had two runs batted in too, with seven different Omaha batters driving in at least one run.
Behind five innings from Castillo, right-hander Joe Barlow only needed 20 pitches to work through 2.0 scoreless frames.
Walter Pennington struck out four batters in the eighth inning, with the third of the four reaching on a dropped third strike. Pennington is just the third pitcher in Storm Chasers history to strike out more than three batters in a single inning, after both Brooks Pounders and Brian Flynn did so within a four-week span in 2016, both at Werner Park.
Behind Pennington, Christian Chamberlain walked the leadoff man in the ninth and struck out his next three to finish off the 10-run victory for Omaha.
The Storm Chasers return to action Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. CT with left-hander Anthony Veneziano headed to the mound for Omaha.
