McBroom mashes two homers in Chasers win over Saints

PAUL, Minn. -- The Omaha Storm Chasers hit multiple solo home runs for the third time in the last four games, including two from first baseman Ryan McBroom, to beat the St. Paul Saints, 6-3, on Friday at CHS Field. Omaha (63-49) has hit 11 home runs in the first four games of the six-game series against St. Paul (57-55).

Shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. hit the Storm Chasers' first home run of the game, blasting a solo shot over the left-center field fence in the first inning against Saints left-hander Charlie Barnes (Loss, 6-4). It was Witt Jr.'s third straight game with a home run in the top of the first inning, his 15th Triple-A home run, and his 31st home run of the season.

McBroom hit his first of two home runs in the game in the fourth to extend the Chasers' lead.

Right-hander Foster Griffin struck out four in a season-high 4.2 innings, throwing a season-high 74 pitches.

The Storm Chasers added two runs in the top of the sixth. After second baseman Lucius Fox singled, Witt Jr. smacked an RBI double to left-center field. Witt Jr. later scored on a sacrifice fly by catcher MJ Melendez. Witt Jr. finished the game 2-for-4 with a home run, double, and two RBIs, and now leads Minor League Baseball in extra-base hits (67) while ranking second in Minor League Baseball in RBIs (91).

Right-hander Collin Snider (Win, 3-2) allowed two runs to the Saints in the bottom of the sixth on three consecutive two-out hits. After back-to-back doubles by Gilberto Celestino and Mark Contreras for the first run, Jimmy Kerrigan singled to drive in the second run of the inning.

Right-fielder Erick Mejia launched a solo home run to begin the seventh inning for the team's third homer of the night before McBroom capped the Chasers' scoring with a line-drive homer to center. It was McBroom's league-leading 29th home run of the season and his third multi-homer game of the year.

The Saints got a run in the eighth on a solo home run by Tomas Telis against left-hander Gabe Speier before right-hander Jace Vines (Save, 2) struck out two in a scoreless ninth.

The Storm Chasers continue their six-game series against the St. Paul Saints (MIN) at CHS Field in St. Paul, Minn. on Friday, when right-hander Brandon Barker (1-2, 8.53) faces right-hander Jason Garcia (0-0, 18.00). First pitch is set for 6:15 p.m. and coverage begins at 5:55 p.m. CT with the Sarpy County Tourism Pregame Show on 1180 The Zone.

After a week-long series against the Saints, the Omaha Storm Chasers return to Werner Park for a six-game series against the Iowa Cubs (CHC) from Sept. 14-19 and a five-game series against the Indianapolis Indians (PIT) as part of the Triple-A Final Stretch from Sept. 22-26, the final home games of the 2021 season.
