Peoria, IL – The Peoria Chiefs and partnering sponsor Busey Bank have teamed up with local police departments for the return for the Gold Ball Initiative, the club announced Tuesday.

The project, which started in 2013, was formed as a tribute to former Chiefs owner Pete Vonachen. Peoria’s own “Mr. Baseball,” Vonachen was known for his generosity and was often spotted giving baseballs to young fans throughout the ballpark.

Law enforcement personnel will distribute the golden baseballs to local youth who are seen displaying positive traits in their communities. Departments from both Peoria and Tazewell counties will participate in the campaign.

“The gold baseball promotion is one of my favorite ways to engage the community,” said Chiefs General Manager Jason Mott. It’s a great way to honor and remember the late Pete Vonachen.”

The golden baseballs, complete with a quote from Vonachen, will be administered throughout the central Illinois area while supplies last.

Young fans who receive a gold baseball can display the ball at the box office in exchange for two free tickets to an August or September home game.
